We All Love Differently

I don’t think I recall a time when my father has told me “I love you.” He’s also not a physically affectionate person, so I grew up not receiving hugs or kisses from him.

Now I know what you may be thinking, “what kind of father is he? How could he not tell his own daughter he loves her?” BUT that’s the beauty of love, I don’t need my dad to tell me he loves me in order for me to know that he does. My dad has been there for me in more ways than three words or a hug or kiss could ever be: he drove my sister and I to school every day, was at every parent-teacher conference, taught me to love God, made sure we took yearly family trips, he taught me to drive, gave me my first car for my first day of college, and the list could go on and on. He showed me he loved me, he didn’t tell me. I’m not saying that verbal and physical affection are not important forms of expressing love, what I’m saying is that they aren’t the be-all for it.

Love is expressed in different ways by different people, and it’s so important for us to be aware of this. I didn’t fully understand this concept until I read what today is one of my favorite books: The Five Love Languages. This book really changed my life, and allowed me to better comprehend love. It opened my mind, and allowed me to see and understand love beyond my own way of expressing it. The book breaks love down into 5 different ways of showing it:

  1. Gifts/ tokens of affection
  2. Quality time together
  3. Physical touch
  4. Words of affirmation
  5. Acts of Service

Just as much as people give love differently, we also tend to receive it in different ways. It’s so important to understand your love language, and that of the people you love and care about as well. Just because you personally may not need a verbal expression of love, does not mean that your partner or loved one doesn’t need it either. The key is to communicate with each other, and realize that if you care enough, you will have to be empathetic and sensible to each other’s way of loving.

This of course is an overly simplified way of viewing love, but I think it serves as such a powerful guide to better understanding each other, and this very complex subject.

No creo recordar ni una sola vez en la que mi padre me dijo “Te Amo.” Él tampoco es una persona que es física afectiva, así que crecí sin recibir ni abrazos ni besos de él.

Ya sé lo que están pensando, ¿” Que clase de padre es? ¿Como es que no le diga a su propia hija que la ama?” PERO eso es lo bello del amor, yo no necesito que mi papa me diga que me ama, para saber que él lo hace. Mi papa ha estado ahí para mí de más maneras de las que un “te amo” o un abrazo o beso podrían estar: él nos llevaba a mí y a mi hermana la escuela todos los días, iba a todas las juntas con nuestros profesores, me enseñó a amar a Dios, planeaba viajes familiares cada año, me enseñó a manejar, me compro mi primer carro para asistir a mi primer día de universidad, y la lista podría seguir. El me mostro que me ama, no me lo dijo con palabras. No digo que no sea importante ser verbalmente y físicamente afectivos, si no que esas no son las únicas maneras de mostrar el amor.

Diferentes personas expresan su amor de diferentes maneras, y es sumamente importante para nosotros estar al tanto de esto. Yo no entendía totalmente este concepto hasta que leí el que hoy en día es uno de mis libros favoritos: Los Cinco Lenguajes Del Amor. Este libro en realidad me cambio la vida, y me permitió entender de mejor manera el amor. Me abrió la mente, y me dejó ver y entender el amor muchos más allá de mi manera de expresarlo. El libro simplifica el amor en 5 maneras diferentes de mostrarlo:

  1. Regalos
  2. Tiempo de calidad
  3. Apapachos
  4. Palabras de afirmación
  5. Actos de servicio

Tal como uno demuestra el amor de diferentes maneras, también tenemos la tendencia de recibirlo de distintas formas. Es tan importante entender nuestro lenguaje del amor, y el de las personas que queremos. Solo porque tu quizá no ocupas que te expresen al amor de una manera verbal, no quiere decir que tu pareja o una persona a la que ames no lo ocupe tampoco. La clave está en la comunicación con cada uno, y en darse cuenta que si se quieren lo suficientemente, tendrán que ser empáticos y sensibles a la manera de amar de cada uno.

Esto es obviamente una manera demasiado simplificada de ver el amor, pero creo que funciona como una muy buena guía para entendernos, y mejor entender este tema tan complejo.
